Nintendo Esports has always confused me. Whenever I talk to the people on the American side of Nintendo, they seem to have a great understanding of esports and how it benefits their titles. They've even hosted a few tournaments in Smash Ultimate, Smash, and Splatoon. Despite this they have a weird way of ignoring most of Smash esports, and especially Smash Melee.
In a recent clip, Hungrybox, one of the best Smash Melee players of all time, talks about Nintendo esports and makes a plea for Nintendo Esports to put more support behind the scene. It got me thinking about the FGC esports community.
I talk a bit about Nintendo Esports in this video, then go into how the franchising models and community models of esports work. We discuss which ones are better and for what reasons.
