Zherka on the Occult, Alchemy, Consciousness (Schizo Rant)

Discipline this small should not work. Ten minutes of reading, then a short walk, then ten more minutes, repeated for months on end. This conversation follows one man testing that discipline against Kabbalah, alchemy, and old Masonic writing that most people never finish. He hated plenty of it. He finished it anyway, at night, half asleep, the words still running when he closed his eyes.

He begins as a skeptic, and stays one about most of it. But one argument will not leave him alone, that what a science textbook calls a chemical reaction, an older tradition once called sacred, and that the explanation offered for love, for sickness, or for a bad habit, has always been thinner than the mystery it claims to solve. He does not ask anyone to believe it. He only asks why the old explanation refuses to die.

Partway through, the material turns dark. It carries old and disturbing claims about corruption reaching into the highest levels of power, and he repeats them without softening any of it. It is not the center of what follows, but it is not hidden from the record either.

The real turn comes later, through an older idea borrowed from Freud, that a dream is a wish in disguise, and that a life quietly arranges itself around whatever a person secretly believes he deserves. He goes back through his own record and finds it everywhere, in an arrest that cost him a relationship and in a sum of money lost the same week. He had been asking for exactly this, out loud, for years, without ever once hearing himself say it. He admits it is the first time reading has ever actually hurt.

Near the end, after a year of failing the same questions, something in him answers nine of them correctly in about ten seconds. He says real Freemasons, men who spent years with this same material, never solved it that fast. He does not fully believe himself. He records it anyway, and hands it to the viewer exactly as it happened, unresolved.
