Jesus Gave Us His Mother

At the very climax of His Passion, as Jesus hung upon the Cross, He chose His final earthly moments to entrust us with one of His greatest gifts: His Mother. In John 19:26–27, we read, “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother.’” In that moment, John represented not only himself, but all of us. Christ gave Mary to the Church as our Mother.

As Fr. Chris Alar explains in this homily, Catholics do not worship Mary as a goddess. To do so would go against the First Commandment and the teaching of the Church. Instead, we love her as a true Mother, given to us by Jesus Himself. She is not an obstacle to Christ, but the surest path to Him, for she always leads us to her Son.

Mary’s role as our Mother is profoundly consoling. She stands with us in our trials, intercedes for us before the throne of her Son, and teaches us how to say “yes” to God with trust and love. Just as she was present at the foot of the Cross, she remains present with us in the crosses we bear.
