St. Augustine’s Devotion to the Blessed Mother

Fr. Anthony Gramlich illuminates St. Augustine’s deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. Along with St. Ambrose, Augustine upheld—not formally defined, but firmly believed—the sinlessness of Mary, setting the theological groundwork that would later become the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. While Augustine did affirm Mary’s lack of personal sin, he did not explicitly teach her freedom from original sin—but his reverent view of her purity points forward to that fuller understanding.

Interestingly, even Martin Luther—an Augustinian friar turned Reformer—affirmed Mary’s purity in surprising ways. In a 1527 sermon, he called it “a sweet and pious belief” that at the infusion of her soul she was “purified from original sin… from the first moment she began to live she was free from all sin.” Though Luther did not accept it as Church dogma, this shows how deeply entwined the early Augustinian tradition was with Marian devotion.

Augustine not only treasured Mary’s purity but believed in her powerful intercession before Christ—just as she interceded at Cana, Augustine knew she intercedes today for us, leading our hearts to her Son.

May we, like Augustine, embrace Mary’s maternal love and trust in the pure and powerful intercession of the Immaculate Mother.
