In today’s homily, Fr. Matt Tomeny reflected on the ancient prayer of the Church: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Known as the Jesus Prayer, it echoes the humble cry of the tax collector in Luke 18:13 and has been prayed by countless Christians through the centuries.
This prayer is powerful because it places us before God in truth: we are sinners in need of His mercy. But Fr. Matt reminds us that if we are going to perpetually ask God for mercy, we must also extend mercy to others. The Jesus Prayer is not meant to remain only on our lips—it must take root in our lives.
To pray “have mercy on me” while refusing to forgive or withholding compassion is to miss the very heart of what we ask for. Mercy received must become mercy given. As Christ teaches, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7).
When we unite this prayer to daily acts of patience, forgiveness, and charity, it transforms us. The Name of Jesus sanctifies our hearts, and mercy begins to define our lives. In the end, the Jesus Prayer leads us not only to receive God’s mercy, but to become instruments of it for the world.
