From the very beginning, Christ did not leave His followers without guidance. He chose the Apostles and entrusted them with authority, giving Peter the keys to the Kingdom (Matthew 16:18–19) and commanding all the Apostles to teach, sanctify, and govern in His name (Matthew 28:18–20).
This mission did not die with them. The Apostles laid hands on their successors, passing on their authority and safeguarding both the teaching and sacramental life of the Church. St. Paul himself affirms this when he writes to Timothy: “What you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). This unbroken chain of succession from the Apostles to today’s bishops ensures that the Catholic Church is the same Church Christ founded, protected by the Holy Spirit.
Protestantism, which rejects apostolic succession, lacks this divinely established continuity. Without it, there is no binding authority to determine authentic doctrine or safeguard the sacraments. This is why there are tens of thousands of Protestant denominations, each interpreting Scripture on their own. But the Catholic Church has remained one, holy, catholic, and apostolic for 2,000 years—just as we profess in the Creed.
To recognize apostolic succession is to recognize Christ’s fidelity to His promise: “I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Matthew 28:20). The Church He founded has never broken from the Apostles. This truth is a powerful witness to the divine origin of Catholicism and an invitation for all Christians to come home to the fullness of faith.
