Judas, Our Cautionary Tale

Fr. David Gunter reminds us of one of the most sobering figures in Scripture: Judas Iscariot. He spent years with Jesus—walking with Him, listening to His words, and witnessing His miracles. Yet even with all of this grace, Judas took his eyes off Christ. Instead of choosing faith and trust, he hardened his heart, refused to believe, and left himself vulnerable to the enemy. Scripture tells us that Satan entered into him, not because Judas was doomed from the start, but because he freely opened the door.

This story should shake us. If someone who had direct access to Jesus Himself could fall so far, what does that say for us? It is not meant to drive us to despair, but to vigilance. Judas’ tragedy is a cautionary tale—reminding us that closeness to holy things is not enough. We must respond with faith, humility, and perseverance.

The difference between Peter and Judas is striking: both failed, but Peter turned back to the Lord in repentance, while Judas turned away in despair. The invitation is clear—keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, trust in His mercy, and never give sin a foothold. What happened to Judas can happen to anyone, but with Christ, what seems like failure can become the beginning of redemption.
