Fr. Anthony Gramlich reminds us that even in times of persecution and martyrdom, Christians are never without hope. The blood of the martyrs has always been the seed of the Church. From the earliest centuries, when believers were thrown into arenas, to today, where many still suffer for the name of Christ, God has always brought good from the world’s darkest attempts to silence His people.

This Jubilee Year of Hope calls us to lift our eyes beyond fear and despair. The Catechism teaches that “hope is the confident expectation of divine blessing and the beatific vision of God” (CCC 2090). Hope is not mere optimism — it is the supernatural virtue that anchors us in God’s providence. When we see Christians mocked, rejected, or even killed, we remember the Cross, which appeared to be defeat but became the very means of salvation for the world.

As St. Paul wrote, “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him” (Romans 8:28). Persecution will never destroy the Church; it purifies her, strengthens her witness, and draws souls to Christ. Our task is to remain steadfast, to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters, and to live as witnesses of hope in our own trials.

In this Jubilee Year, let us ask: Do we trust that God’s plan, even when hidden, is always for the good of His people and the salvation of souls?
