YouTube Description
as posted by the channelFr. Jason Lewis reflects on the moment when St. Longinus, the Roman centurion at Calvary, pierced the side of Christ. The lance opened not only the Body of Jesus but revealed the depths of His Sacred Heart, from which flowed blood and water. This outpouring is no mere detail of the Passion — it is the fountain of mercy and grace for the whole world.
The Fathers of the Church recognized in this flow of blood and water the very birth of the Church: blood symbolizing the Eucharist, water symbolizing Baptism. From the pierced Heart of the Savior comes the life of the Sacraments, through which men and women of every nation are drawn into eternal communion with God. As the Catechism affirms, “The Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross” (CCC 766).
Christ gives us the greatest of all gifts — His very Self in the Eucharist, the Bread of Life, so that we may live in Him and He in us (John 6:51-58). The Divine Mercy devotion reminds us that this Heart, once pierced, never ceases to pour out mercy on sinners. St. Faustina heard Christ say: “From My pierced Heart, as from a fount, mercy flows for souls” (Diary, 1190).
This is the invitation to every soul: to believe, to feed upon Him, and to receive life everlasting. The blood and water are for you — the sign that God’s mercy is greater than sin, and His love stronger than death.
