Chris Alar, MIC, reflects on St. Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of St. John the Apostle and the third bishop of Antioch, who first used the word catholicos—the root of the word Catholic. This word means more than “universal.” It means according to the whole—the fullness of faith found only in the Church Christ Himself established.
Writing nearly 1,500 years before any other Christian denomination existed, St. Ignatius declared: “Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” His words affirm the unbroken unity of the Church under the bishops, successors of the Apostles.
To be Catholic is to live in the wholeness of truth, faith, and grace handed down from Christ through His Apostles. When we say “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church,” we profess our belief in this same living Body of Christ—unchanged for two thousand years.
