Fr. Tyler reflects on a profound truth witnessed by the Apostles and every martyr of the Church: even when the body is bound, the human heart remains a sanctuary no persecution can enter. No prison bars, no torture, no earthly power can force the soul to surrender its freedom to choose God. The heart is that sacred interior place where grace dwells, decisions are made, and true liberty is found.

The Apostles understood this. They proclaimed the Gospel as free men even in chains, singing hymns in their cells, choosing Christ in total freedom even as the world tried to silence them. Their persecutors could wound their bodies, but not their will. Their choice for God remained untouched—and that choice is the highest expression of human freedom. As the Catechism teaches, “Freedom is the power to act or not to act… and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility” (CCC 1731). True freedom means choosing God, even when everything else is stripped away.

Fr. Tyler reminds us that this truth matters today. While most of us will not endure the physical suffering of the early martyrs, we face cultural pressures, moral confusion, and spiritual trials that aim to enslave the heart. Yet nothing can force us to stop choosing God. Nothing can touch that inner sanctuary where Christ reigns. If our heart remains faithful, we remain free.
