The Cost of Sin & the Justice of God

In today’s reflection, Fr. Mark helps us recover a truth our modern world often forgets: sin is not merely a mistake—it is an offense against God’s goodness, and because of that, it creates a real imbalance that must be set right. As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, “the balance of God’s justice” requires that when we take pleasure in sin, something in us must be corrected, purified, and reordered.

This isn’t punishment for punishment’s sake. It is God acting as a loving Father, restoring the very order our sin disrupts. The Catechism reminds us: “Sin creates a proclivity to sin; it engenders vice” (CCC 1865). If sin disorders the heart, then justice—God’s justice—reorders it.

Advent gives us the perfect moment to receive this truth. Christ comes not only to forgive but to heal, to purge, to transform. He takes the imbalance our sin creates and offers Himself as the atonement, as the One who restores justice through love. But for grace to take root, we must allow our hearts to be corrected—sometimes painfully—so they can be made whole.

Let the Lord reorder your life this Advent. Bring Him the sins that have stolen your peace, the habits that have claimed your will, the pleasures that have dulled your soul. He longs to restore, to elevate, to sanctify.
