The Second Coming of Christ is not a distant idea meant to frighten us, but a truth meant to awaken our hearts. The real question, he says, is whether we are actually looking forward to that day. If the thought of Christ’s justice unsettles us, it may be because we have not yet embraced His mercy.
In this Homily Highlight, Fr. Matt points us directly to the heart of the Gospel. Jesus revealed to St. Faustina that now is the time of mercy: “I come as the King of Mercy… before I come as a just Judge” (Diary of St. Faustina, 83). Christ desires that souls enter the open doors of His merciful Heart today, while grace is still freely offered. Divine Mercy is not opposed to justice; it prepares us to stand before it.
This teaching invites a moment of honest reflection. Are we living as if mercy is real and available now? Or are we delaying conversion, reconciliation, and trust? Christ’s justice will come, but it is preceded by patience, compassion, and mercy poured out from His Heart. Advent — and every day of our lives — is an invitation to receive that mercy while it is still offered.
Those who accept mercy now will not fear judgment later. They will rejoice at His coming.
