Salvation Is Not a One-Time Event

Father Mark Baron, MIC confronts a widespread misunderstanding that distorts the Gospel itself: the idea that salvation is secured once and for all, regardless of how one lives afterward. Scripture does not teach “once saved, always saved.” What it reveals instead is a living relationship that must be received, lived, and endured.

Salvation begins with God’s grace and is received through faith, but it does not end there. To be saved is to be conformed to Christ — to allow His life to shape our choices, our conduct, and our perseverance. Jesus speaks plainly: “But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” (Mt 24:13; NABRE). Endurance is not optional. Perseverance is not an accessory to faith. It is part of faith itself.

The Catechism teaches that grace is a real participation in the life of God, but it can be rejected or neglected through grave sin (Catechism §1861). Salvation is not automatic; it is relational. God never withdraws His mercy, but He never overrides our freedom. To remain in grace requires humility, repentance, and fidelity — especially when following Christ becomes costly.

Authentic Christianity does not promise spiritual shortcuts. It promises transformation. The Christian life is a journey of ongoing conversion, sustained by grace and completed only if we remain faithful. The Gospel calls us not merely to believe once, but to remain — to endure — until the end.

This teaching is not harsh. It is honest. And it calls every believer to examine not just what they profess, but how they live.
