Divine Bridegroom: The Wedding Feast of Salvation

Father  Tyler  Mentzer, MIC reminds us that the heart of Christ’s public ministry is the proclamation that He comes as the divine bridegroom, the Messiah who establishes a perpetual wedding feast with His people. In the Gospel of John the beloved disciple hears, “The bridegroom is with you, let us rejoice” (Jn 3:29; NABRE). This image is more than poetic language; it reveals the intimate marital bond that God creates with humanity—a covenant of love that surpasses any earthly contract.

The Catechism explains that marriage is “a sign of the union of Christ and the Church” (CCC 1601), and the same divine love extends to every believer through the sacramental communion of the Body of Christ. When Jesus declares Himself the bridegroom, He invites us to a feast of communion, where the faithful become members of the mystical body, sharing in the joys and sorrows of the Lord. The feast is inaugurated at the Last Supper and consummated in the Eucharist, the “marriage banquet of the Lamb” (Rev 19:9; NABRE). Each reception of the Eucharist is a foretaste of the heavenly wedding banquet, where the bridegroom will be united forever with His beloved Church.

In this Lenten season, fasting is not merely deprivation but preparation for that great celebration. By denying ourselves, we create space for the bridegroom’s love to fill the void of our hearts, turning ordinary hunger into a yearning for eternal union with Christ. As Fr. Mentzer urges, let our hearts be tuned to the rhythm of this divine marriage, seeking not temporal comforts but the everlasting communion with the Messiah.
