1:26Now Playing"Send forth your spirit, and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth." This simple prayer from Psalm 104, verse 30, carries profound meaning for Christians. The spirit mentioned is not merely an abstract force of life, but the person of the Holy Spirit.
Brother Stephen reflects on this marvelous psalm, composed for Jewish temple worship, which praises God for the wonders of His creation. Yet it has a deeper meaning for believers. The Holy Spirit was acting with the Father and the Son when they created the world, and He is active today in recreating and renewing the face of the earth.
The first creation brought all things into existence out of nothing. The new creation brings about divine life in our souls, where it was non-existent before. The Holy Spirit renews the face of the earth when He makes us holy and the world holy through, among other things, our witness.
This renewal is not merely a future hope. It is happening now, in the lives of those who open themselves to the Spirit's work. When we see this renewal happening and take part in it today, we are called to offer praise and thanks to the Holy Spirit for renewing the face of the earth.
Then we must ask the Holy Spirit: How can I help the world be renewed? And listen for His answer. You might have some creative ideas you did not expect about how to show God's love and mercy to others. This is the work of the Spirit in us — transforming our hearts so that we become instruments of His renewal in the world.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of transformation. He works in silence, in hiddenness, in the ordinary moments of daily life. He renews, not through dramatic displays alone, but through the quiet faithfulness of those who surrender to His guidance.
