The Most Rev. Joe Roesch, MIC, reflects on the profound tragedy of original sin and the magnificent gracious restoration offered through Jesus Christ. Father Joe begins by reminding us of the divine intention from the very beginning: a relationship of perfect harmony and enduring self-giving love between God and humanity. Imagine Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, living in that unbroken communion before sin entered the world. God’s desire was simply for this beautiful relationship to continue forever. However, the choice to sin created a devastating rupture, wounding the connection between Creator and creature.

Father Joe explains that this act was not merely a rule-breaking moment but a rejection of God’s love. As St. John Paul II taught, humanity essentially declared, “I don’t need You, God; I can do it myself.” By asserting their independence, they rejected the very love offered to them. This rejection wounded the relationship, leaving a place in the heart that only God could rightly, properly fill. Yet, in His infinite mercy, God did not abandon us. He sent His Son into the world specifically to repair the damage caused by that first sin. Jesus came to restore the love that was missing, healing the damage created by our pride and disobedience.
