Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins talked about owning the number one spot on the Billboard Top 100 list for 25 out of the 52 weeks in a year following the release of Destiny Child's "Say My Name." Darkchild said the song is his favorite song that he's produced and was the first song he produced for the group.
He revealed that the original beat was completely different and was inspired by the 2-step sound that the Spice Girls introduced him to. However, Destiny's Child, the label, Matthew Knowles all hated the beat and it wasn't until Darkchild was mixing the beat that he ultimately agreed and made the new beat on the spot.
The hit earned the producer his first Grammy award by beating out Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough," which he also produced. Darkchild also responded negatively to Kanye West urinating on his Grammy and revealed he reached out to him after the act. He referred to Kanye as a genius and believed Kanye would take that act back if he could.
