He explained that Spike initially didn't want him for the movie, but his friend, actor Montgomery Roberts, acted as his manager and convinced them to let him meet with Spike Lee for the movie. After dressing for the part, Ernest was asked to read for the part of Sidney, and after several call backs and an audition with Denzel, he won the role.
