Former baseball player and manager Pete Rose defended his actions from a controversial 1988 game against the Mets, as well as allegations of betting on baseball games in 1989. In the 1988 home game, Rose recalled a controversial play where he believed the umpire made a late call leading to the Mets scoring a winning run. He argued that the umpire provoked him by poking him, causing him to shove back, which led to a 30-day suspension, the longest ever for an on-field incident involving a manager. In 1989, it came to light that Rose was betting on baseball games, a claim he initially denied but later admitted to, stating he believed in his team and never bet against them. Rose also refuted claims that he bet $10,000 a day and expressed frustration with the media's focus on old reports.
