Joey Merlino defended himself against allegations that suggested he instigated a mob war to seize control of Philadelphia's crime family. Merlino heavily criticized his accusers, Gaetano Scafidi, Peter Caprio, and Ron Previty, discrediting their character and their history of criminal convictions. Despite being found guilty of racketeering, extortion, and receiving stolen property, and receiving a 14-year sentence, Merlino claimed the charges were unjust. Merlino alleged that Previty entrapped him in a bookmaking operation. Although admitting to enjoying gambling, he denied having a gambling addiction. He also accused the justice system of favoritism, citing examples where other individuals faced lesser consequences for their alleged crimes.
