Former basketball player Rex Chapman revealed how his interracial relationship was received during his years at the University of Kentucky. Chapman, a White athlete, had a Black girlfriend, which was considered unusual in Kentucky during that time. He recalled how he was asked by a coach to keep his relationship private in order not to draw attention, a directive he found deeply troubling. Chapman deliberately defied the advice, hoping to provoke a public backlash that would raise the issue for debate, but the media avoided the topic. He also pointed out the double standard that existed, noting that his Black teammates were dating White girls on campus without any backlash. Chapman found the unwritten rules to be pure racism and struggled to compartmentalize his feelings between off-court emotional distress and on-court success.
