Tavis Smiley reflected on being the highest-ranked African-American on Talkers magazine's 2024 "Heavy Hundred," positioned at number 33. He emphasized the importance of this recognition in conservative-dominated talk radio, attributing his jump from number 45 to his dedication to diversifying the platform. Smiley underscored the need for more Black voices to be represented in media to reflect America's changing demographics towards a majority-minority society. He also discussed his efforts in building a Black-owned talk radio network and offered his show free to urban stations for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. Smiley highlighted the significance of Kamala Harris' nomination acceptance, mirroring his historical coverage of Barack Obama's 2008 convention. Later in the interview, Tavis listed Black influencers he would invite to the State of the Black Union if he was in control of it.
