Billy Garland, Tupac Shakur's biological father, shared his experiences visiting his son in prison. This was the first substantial one-on-one meeting between the two, lasting roughly five hours. Garland made the long trip, initially uncertain about Tupac's desire to see him, given the rapper’s claims in songs that his father was dead or absent. Upon meeting, Tupac questioned Garland about Afeni Shakur. Garland found it difficult to reconcile Tupac's queries with his own positive perception of Afeni, choosing not to disparage her despite learning about past issues. Garland also highlighted the harsh conditions Tupac faced in prison, including threats from correctional officers aware of his anti-police lyrics. Despite getting married during his incarceration, Tupac's relationship did not lead to conjugal visits, resulting in an annulled marriage soon after his release.
