Initially under immense pressure to turn informant against Whitey Bulger, Shea recalled resisting attempts by the federal government to make him "roll," a testament to his ingrained code against ratting.
Throughout his legal ordeal, Shea shuffled through high-profile defense attorneys, including those affiliated with infamous mobsters like John Gotti, before ultimately settling with Richard Egbert, a choice heavily influenced by Bulger himself. Egbert brokered a plea deal, reducing Shea's potential life sentence to about a 12-year sentence, inclusive of time served. Describing his sentiments upon accepting the plea, Shea referred to the deal as favorable compared to his looming life sentence.
