As a veteran with overseas experience, Irving painted a vivid picture of the growing resentment against the U.S., expressing the belief that the nation’s aggressive foreign policy may eventually provoke a collective backlash. He referenced historical empires, pondering if America, at 248 years old, could face a decline similar to those before it, due to its contentious dealings worldwide.
