In a riveting recount of his early days with the LAPD, former officer Ruben Palomares detailed an intense encounter that nearly cost him his life. Navigating the perilous world of juvenile narcotics as an undercover agent, Palomares, at just 22 years old, was thrust into a high-stakes environment reminiscent of "21 Jump Street." His youthful demeanor and ingenious approach enabled him to infiltrate high schools to track narcotics activity. However, Palomares soon faced an unexpected danger — a dramatic shootout that unfolded while he was working undercover.
During what seemed like a routine stop at a payphone, Palomares was blindsided by two individuals, one of whom pressed a gun to his stomach. Instinct kicked in as Palomares found himself grappling with the gunman. The confrontation escalated violently, resulting in Palomares sustaining gunshot wounds to both legs. Remarkably, in the chaos, he managed to disarm and incapacitate his attacker — ultimately shooting the robber in a highly sensitive area as the assailant attempted to flee. This harrowing experience left Palomares grappling with PTSD.
