Judge Greg Mathis reflected on a transformative period in his life marked by a violent jail altercation and his mother's battle with cancer. At just 17, Mathis found himself incarcerated in Detroit, facing hardened criminals. A confrontation over stolen snacks escalated, with Mathis defending himself using a broomstick. During his incarceration, Mathis received a life-altering visit from his mother, who had never before come to see him in jail. She expressed deep disappointment in him, revealing her cancer diagnosis and limited time left to live. Her words, "Would you please change your life before I die?" served as a catalyst for Mathis's transformation. After his release, he enrolled in Eastern Michigan University, seeking success to honor his mother's wish. Despite her passing shortly thereafter, Mathis carried her spirit with him, driving him to achieve and make her proud in the years that followed.
