Judge Greg Mathis revealed the unexpected motivation behind his career path as a judge. In his early 30s, Mathis was a prominent criminal defense lawyer entrenched in Detroit's political landscape. Despite encouragement from influential figures like the retiring Mayor of Detroit and Reverend Jesse Jackson to pursue higher political office, Mathis had a different plan. His aspirations to join the judiciary were driven by a desire for retribution against the lawyers who attempted to block his law license years prior due to his youthful transgressions. This determination led him to the bench, where he famously had the chance to preside over cases involving two of those very lawyers within his first year. In an amusing twist of fate, Mathis offered the lawyers the option for him to recuse himself due to their shared history.
