Alex Sanchez shared his harrowing journey from El Salvador to the streets of Los Angeles, shedding light on the complexities and challenges faced as an immigrant youth. Sanchez's early life was marked by displacement and adversity; his parents fled escalating political conflict in El Salvador in the mid-70s, and it wasn't until 1979 that Alex and his younger brother were smuggled into the U.S.
Reuniting with his parents in LA's Skid Row was jarring. Sanchez described transitioning from the scenic hills of El Salvador to a cramped one-bedroom apartment shared with his family. The cultural and language barriers added to the alienation he felt, making school a battleground, not only for education but for survival against bullying. As tensions and pressures mounted, Sanchez found himself swept into gang life, joining MS-13 in the 1980s—a path many marginalized youths took in search of belonging and protection.
