Former MS-13 member Alex Sanchez describes his difficult journey leaving the gang to rebuild his life and be a father. After witnessing the brutal consequences of gang life—including friends dying or receiving life sentences—Sanchez knew he had to change for his son’s sake. Returning to Los Angeles, he struggled to find stability but committed to staying away from violence. Unlike some gangs that forbid leaving, Sanchez explains that MS-13 allows members to exit for family or religious reasons. Although he was prepared to face punishment for stepping away, Sanchez called a meeting with fellow gang members to announce he was “hanging up his gloves.” Impressed by his dedication to his child and sobriety, the gang respected his choice and “gave him a pass.”
