Bobby Shmurda shed light on the unique evolution of the Crips in Brooklyn, tracing their origins back to the 1990s. Unlike the typical Crips seen in Los Angeles or other parts of New York, Brooklyn’s Crips developed from Jamaican immigrant communities, evolving directly from the infamous Jamaican Shower Posse gang, known locally as "big dogs" in Shmurda’s neighborhood.

Shmurda explained that his area’s Crip sets are predominantly West Indian, shaped by the immigrant experience and a culture of rebellion against social stigmas faced by Caribbean migrants during the 70s and 80s. This distinct identity set Brooklyn Crips apart from other New York gangs historically dominated by Bloods. Though Shmurda himself has retired from gang life, he reflected on the complex dynamics of loyalty, conflict, and community within these groups, emphasizing how cultural roots continue to influence gang identities in Brooklyn today.
