Hector Berrellez spoke out about Mexican drug cartels placing bounties on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. According to Berrellez, cartels are offering $5,000 for kidnappings of ICE agents, $10,000 for assassinations, and up to $50,000 for killing high-ranking officials. Despite these clear threats, Berrellez criticized recent laws, such as California’s ban on ICE agents wearing masks to conceal their identities, arguing these measures endanger agents by exposing them to cartel retaliation. He emphasized the need to protect law enforcement officers who risk their lives enforcing immigration laws, warning that political opposition and lack of cooperation with ICE could escalate tensions. Berrellez expressed concern that such divisions and hostility between states and political factions might push the country toward civil unrest. He called for unity and stronger support for agents working on the front lines of border security.
