NBA Hall of Famer Michael Cooper opened up about a turbulent family past marked by violence and hardship. Cooper revealed his stepfather, a full-blooded Cherokee who struggled with alcoholism, attempted to kill his mother after their breakup. Later, his stepfather killed his mom’s boyfriend amidst a bitter divorce battle. Cooper’s mother subsequently left the family, relocating to San Francisco to escape the chaos. Cooper was raised mainly by his grandmother in Pasadena. He also shared a harrowing childhood injury at age five, when a fall caused him 102 stitches and a grim prognosis that he’d never walk again—only to defy the odds thanks to his grandmother’s prayers.
