Former DEA agent Hector Berrellez shared insights suggesting Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman may have cooperated with U.S. authorities to facilitate the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of the rival Sinaloa cartel faction. Berrellez believes El Chapo, despite being imprisoned in a supposed supermax facility, likely negotiated a deal given the intense pressure on both him and his son, who also faces charges. This cooperation may have included secret arrangements granting more comfortable confinement in exchange for valuable information.
Berrellez also explained the ongoing cartel infighting, highlighting how two of El Chapo’s sons defected from the Sinaloa cartel to align with an opposing group for survival. With El Mayo now convicted, Berrellez predicts he’ll spend life in a secured U.S. prison under similar cooperative terms—but won’t be freed—ensuring continued pressure on cartel structures from within the system.
