Despite the officer patting down Newman, the suspect managed to conceal a handgun, which malfunctioned and jammed when he tried firing multiple shots at close range—likely saving the officer’s life.
Irving called the event “divine intervention” and expressed disbelief that the weapon was missed during the frisk. He stressed the need for police departments to review proper pat-down procedures to prevent such oversights. The discussion also touched on concerns about youth behavior, parenting, and the value of life, highlighting how Newsome risked severe felony charges and decades in prison over a misdemeanor theft. Both Irving and the host underscored the officer’s remarkable restraint and survival in an extraordinarily dangerous encounter.
