Former NBA player Tim Thomas recently recounted a nerve-wracking experience in Detroit involving NBA teammates and gang tensions. The group was supporting fellow Detroit native and player “Track” during his first game back home, attending multiple dinners and events. Traveling in a convoy of five vehicles, including stretch limos, they unknowingly stirred conflict when gang rivalries flared—sparked by a girlfriend connected to Track’s family and another gang.
As they moved from one restaurant to another, two vehicles abruptly pulled alongside their convoy, and armed gang members emerged, pointing high-powered guns at them. The NBA players found themselves trapped on a street with no easy escape. Thanks to the quick intervention of former officer and NBA security expert Jackie Miles, the situation was peacefully diffused.
Thomas recalled the intense and frightening encounter as a stark reminder of the realities in Detroit’s streets, even for professional athletes.
