Serving time during the period of Nipsey’s tragic death, Jap5 revealed he watched Nipsey’s videos repeatedly in prison, growing to respect the late artist’s wisdom and community impact. “I used to be afraid to say I liked Nipsey,” Jap5 admitted, highlighting the intense gang dynamics in LA.

He acknowledged Nipsey's efforts to bridge gaps by being careful about how he portrayed gang culture in his art, promoting unity between Crips and Bloods. Despite being from the Rolling 60s, Jap5 saw Nipsey as an influential figure who did “a lot for the community” and served as a role model even for his enemies.
