Satisfaction works a lot like a fraction. You can try to increase the numerator by getting more, or you can shrink the denominator by wanting less. One of those approaches is far more durable.

Our instincts push us to accumulate. More status, more possessions, more validation. That impulse was useful for survival, but it was never designed to make us happy. When we keep feeding it, satisfaction stays just out of reach.

Traditions of religion and philosophy have been pointing to the same insight for centuries. Real contentment does not come from endlessly adding. It comes from learning how to subtract. From refining our desires rather than expanding them.

This is not a modern idea. It is a very old one that we keep forgetting.
