The present does live up to the past, even if it does not feel that way in the moment.

We often tell ourselves that the past was better, especially when we think about holidays. Warmer. Simpler. Sweeter. But that is not how memory actually works.

Over time, we edit our memories. We keep the good parts and quietly discard the rest. The frustrations, the tensions, the disappointments were there too, even if we no longer recall them as vividly. The present feels harder only because we are living all of it in real time.

Understanding this gives you a kind of freedom. You can notice the impulse to compare today to an idealized past and smile at it. Knowing how memory works does not make life perfect, but it can make it gentler.

Merry Christmas Eve.
