as posted by the channelA digital medication version of the antipsychotic drug aripiprazole (Abilify) has been available in the US since 2012. A tiny sensor affixed to the medication is activated by stomach acid, and sends a Blue Tooth signal to a patch on the skin. The patch then sends the information that the pill has been swallowed to an app, along with other information (activity, heart rate, self-described mood). A slew of ethical issues surround these products, but it is extremely likely we will be seeing more of them.
Stimulant medications are likely to be at the top of the list for this type of monitoring for several reasons:
- they are controlled medications with high risk for abuse and addiction
- they are frequently diverted or "misused" by others
- the benefits correlate closely with time the drugs are consumed
- forgetfulness, and missed doses, are common in ADHD.
