In the last twenty years, the number of people diagnosed with ADHD and the numbers receiving prescriptions for stimulant medications have increased dramatically. Between 2012 and 2022 prescriptions increased almost 60%. US overdose deaths involving stimulants (meth, cocaine, and prescription stimulants) have soared from less than 4K in 2000 to more than 55K by 2023.
Even though the preponderance of stimulant overdose deaths are from methamphetamine and cocaine, there is still a real and deadly problem with individuals becoming addicted to and dying from, prescription stimulants.
Contrary to media hysteria, stimulant prescriptions for children have actually declined slightly over the last decade. But they have risen for adults, particularly women. Much of the increase in prescription prescribing has occurred via online ADHD treatment centers. A skyrocketing proportion of these prescriptions have been written by nurse practitioners.
The DEA is about to release new guidelines for telepsychiatry controlled substance prescribing, and they appear poised to target the online prescribing clinics. This will likely have a huge impact on ADHD treatment. We will see whether it actually leads to reducing deaths from stimulant overdoses.
