Twenty years ago the FDA, in an attempt to decrease deaths, required antidepressants to have prominent warnings about the risk of promoting new suicidal thoughts. Previous studies had indicated undesirable outcomes of this measure, but a new, comprehensive analysis confirms that the warnings scared people away from treatment, resulting in more untreated depression and an increase in deaths from suicide.
Prescribers and patients need to be aware of the risks that medications pose, but this should be in the context of the costs of not treating a condition. The FDA should correct their actions, and downgrade their warnings.
Even in the era of close cooperation between the pharmaceutical industry, academic medicine, and federal regulators, the FDA pushed back against the industry to try to protect the public. What might happen under an administration that is loudly and avowedly anti-science, anti-pharmaceutical companies, and anti-antidepressants, is frightening to imagine.
