Main Chapters:

The holiday season can be quite stressful, in part because expectations exceed experiences, but also because for many their are substantial increases in demands (for socialization, financial expenditures, forced joviality) and at the same time reduced structure (disruption of normal work/school schedules, support systems that are burdened with their own holiday tasks.)

I encourage a bio-psycho-social approach to taking care of yourself during the holidays:

Biology:

- Get enough exposure to morning bright light (outdoor or indoors)

- Get sufficient sleep

- Minimize alcohol intake

Psychology:

- Scheduling to address increased demands and less support

- Treat scheduling as a right brain, not left brain, exercise

- Remember why you WANT to do activities, not why you should/need

Social:

- Get the dose of social interactions that work for you

- Create your own meaning for what the holidays are about

- If you want a smile, give a smile!
