Main Chapters:

A growing body of research supports the use of psilocybin for treating depression, substance abuse, and other conditions. Psilocybin works on serotonin-2A receptors and produces new synapses and rewires connections in the medial prefrontal cortex. Long lasting personality changes can occur from one or two doses.

In controlled, medically supervised use, psilocybin has been shown to be quite safe.

But the studies done so far have used a small set of very carefully selected subjects, given intensive, if brief, psychotherapy in conjunction with psilocybin, so it is still not clear how well the safe and beneficial results of research studies will translate to the general population when it becomes more widely available.
