Claims of "Trump Derangement Syndrome" have been leveled at many individuals who have dared to question Trump's actions and comments. Republican legislators in Minnesota have even proposed at law that would formally recognize TDS as a mental illness.
But psychiatric diagnoses are designed to help understand and treat mental health conditions. TDS does not meet these criteria, and is not recognized by any mental health organization or institution.
While Trump elicits strong thoughts and feelings in his admirers and opponents, few of his detractors actually have a delusional disorder. Informed discussions are a foundational value to preserve within democracies.
Using mental health labels to attack those you don't agree with creates stigma and discourages appropriate mental health treatment.
