Acetylcholine is an important neurotransmitter abundant in the body and brain, but it gets far less press than dopamine or serotonin, which are present in far smaller quantities. Most of the focus on acetylcholine is directed at plant and spider poisons that interfere with the acetycholine system.
But Cobenfy, a new anti-schizophrenia medicine that binds to acetycholine receptors in the prefrontal cortex may be a game changer, not just for schizophrenia, but for additional mental health conditions. Preliminary evidence suggests that this agent can enhance both cognitive and executive functions that are based in the prefrontal cortex. It, or related agents, may prove helpful for ADHD, dementia, and other conditions.
