In November 2013 the first controlled study of solriamfetol (Sunosi) for ADHD was published, with encouraging results about its tolerability and efficacy in treating ADHD. Phase 3 trials of this dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor for the treatment of ADHD started in July 2023. Industry experts anticipate that in a year or two the drug may receive approval for treating ADHD.
The FDA approved Sunosi for excessive daytime sleepiness from narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea a few years ago (2019). So far, Sunosi seems safer than stimulants, and more effective than modafinil in improving daytime alertness in these conditions. Whether Sunosi turns out to be more effective than bupropion (Wellbutrin, Forfivo, Aplenzin) in the treatment of ADHD remains to be seen. The preliminary data suggests that benefits of solriamfetol for ADHD are not simply due to decreasing daytime sleepiness.
