Main Chapters:

Research over the past several decades has indicated that ADHD is a risk factor for loneliness. Some people with ADHD present as being “different” or awkward in interactions because they miss social cues or have less appreciation for the personal space of others, and this can lead to social rejection. Hyperfocused ADHD-driven behavior, particularly in the computer age, can also lead to isolation.

Only recently have researchers begun documenting how loneliness rewires brains. Increasingly, they are finding that loneliness can lead to many behaviors that overlap with those of ADHD- troubles with planning and organization, emotional dysregulation, and impulsivity.

This suggests that for some individuals there may be a feedback loop whereby ADHD leads to loneliness which in turn strengthens ADHD tendencies, which may reinforce patterns of being alone and isolated. Cognitive and behavioral strategies may help break these patterns of isolation.
