Main Chapters:

Professional groups have subdivided ADHD into "inattentive" and "hyperactive/impulsive" subtypes, along with a "combined type" for more than forty years.  But attempts to find biomarkers - genetic, blood chemicals, neurotransmitters, brain activation (EEG, fMRI) that correlate with these types have not panned out. A new study took a different approach - looking at unusual patterns of connectivity within the brains of over one thousand children, and finding that these aberrant patterns clustered into 3 separate groups, each different from the others and different from children without ADHD. However, these three biotypes did not show good correlation with our traditional categorization of subtypes of ADHD based on symptom lists.
